The general mission of a career services department in a university is to provide guidance and resources so that students can achieve their career goals. This is usually done in the form of career counselling and advising. Often this department partners with staff, alumni and employers in the community to help students realize their career goals.
Career counseling is often of profound importance to students, as most are in school to prepare to enter the workforce. A common service is the administration of various assessment tests, designed to determine which careers will “fit?the student. Such tests include the Myers-Briggs test (personality preferences), the strong interest inventory (matching interests to careers), and the skills and values assessment (an inventory of your preferred skills and values).
Workshops can be arranged for groups that will assist in job-hunting strategies such as networking, resume writing, and interview skills. Information on upcoming career fairs and recruitment drives will also be made available.
